River swimming

Rivers of the Cévennes, moments of wilderness

In the Cévennes, rivers wind their way between mountain ranges and valleys, carving out natural landscapes where the rushing waters invite you to take a dip.

Here, nature reigns supreme, offering lovers of authenticity an idyllic setting to cool off far from the hustle and bustle of crowded beaches.

Marvel at the turquoise waters of the Gardon, the secret meanders of the Cèze, the deep pools of the Luech or the cliffs of the Chassezac.

To ensure our favourite swimming spots stay that way, please remember to take your rubbish away, follow the parking instructions, and do not damage the surrounding flora. Please also be mindful of the wildlife living nearby, both on land and in the water. If you build a dam with your children, you will inevitably disrupt the area’s biodiversity. Please dismantle it before you leave.

Le Chassezac
Amidst limestone cliffs and lush vegetation

Chassezac River

Over time, it has carved out deep gorges with impressive limestone walls. Its course winds its way between steep cliffs and rocky outcrops, offering a succession of narrow gorges, wild beaches and natural pools.

The Chassezac reveals all its magic beneath the canopy of the Bois de Païolive, a lovely wood of white oaks, dotted with rocks of unexpected shapes and labyrinthine paths. Here, the white cliffs plunge into the water, creating unforgettable swimming spots amidst shade, stone and light.

Far from the crowds (except in the height of summer – we won’t lie to you!), set off to explore the Chassezac and its unique blend of rock and vegetation.

La Cèze
Gentleness and hidden pools

Cèze River

This iconic river of the Cévennes foothills, which flows from the heights of Mont Lozère to the gateway to Provence, will charm you with its tranquillity and understated beauty. Its gentle current, pebble beaches, crystal-clear pools and often sheltered swimming spots are perfect for relaxation and family outings.

As it flows towards the Rhône Valley, it passes through numerous villages, some of which are listed amongst the most beautiful in France. Goudargues, Monclus, Tharaux, and of course La Roque-sur-Cèze with its iconic Sautadet Waterfalls.

Heading towards Mont Lozère, it remains less well-known and offers numerous wild and unspoilt swimming spots.

Le Luech
Fresh air and mountain scenery

Luech River

More untamed and secluded, this river winds its way through an unspoilt valley, far from the main tourist routes. Here, there are no large, bustling beaches or rows of canoes, but a succession of crystal-clear pools, invigorating currents and swimming spots nestled between granite boulders and chestnut forests.

The water of the Luech often remains cool, even in the height of the Cévennes summer. The banks, by turns wooded and rocky, invite you to relax and contemplate.
You’ll love its little stone bridges. These modest structures have long since replaced the wooden footbridges that were swept away by the floods every year. Remarkably sturdy, they are inspired by a Roman design: no central pillar obstructs the water’s flow, and a single arch spans the river, resting on each bank.

It is in the village of Le Chambon that we direct you to these potholes, which patiently await your dives and splashes. And your picnics on large slabs carved by time.
