Biodiversity

Keep your eyes peeled and your ears open

At Les Terrasses, biodiversity isn’t just a concept – it’s a daily spectacle!

Hoopoes, egrets and herons fly past the garden. As night falls, bats trace their patterns above the Auzonnet, and you drift off to sleep lulled by the croaking of frogs. With a little patience and luck, the river holds unforgettable encounters in store… Ask us what they are; we love talking about them.

For families, our biodiversity micro-adventure kit transforms the garden and riverbanks into a playground of discovery: butterflies, lizards, crayfish, damselflies… you don’t need to go far for the children’s eyes to pop out of their heads.

An LPO nature reserve in the Cévennes National Park, our gîtes are situated at the crossroads of two landscapes: the Cévennes mountains on one side, the Mediterranean garrigue on the other. Shall we take you to discover them?

Nature on your doorstep

In the morning, the birds wake you up. From your terrace, you can see egrets and herons fishing in the Auzonnet. You can hear woodpeckers drumming on the tree trunks. In the evening, bats take over above the river, an owl makes its presence known, and the croaking of frogs lulls you to sleep. Pierre, who spent two years at FRAPNA, had never seen a kingfisher in the wild before arriving here. Here, he sees them from the window.
Les terrasses are LPO sanctuaries, and that’s no coincidence.

The river at the foot of the gîtes is home to a discreet but very much present life: fish, crayfish, and for the most patient… a few rare encounters that are well worth the detour: otters frolicking after dark and beavers searching for their building materials.

The Cévennes National Park

In our opinion (subjective ratings out of 3)

Established in 1970, the Cévennes National Park is unique in the French landscape: it is the first national park to be inhabited all year round. In the Cévennes, a sizeable permanent population brings this area to life on a daily basis. It spans three departments — Lozère, Gard and Ardèche — and encompasses five mountain ranges, each with its own distinct character: the Aigoual, the Causse Méjean with the Gorges du Tarn and Gorges de la Jonte, Mont Lozère, the Cévennes valleys and the Cévennes foothills.

Les Terrasses is located within the Park, and we are proud of this. We are particularly proud to bear the Esprit Parc National label, which recognises our commitment to tourism that respects this living heritage. The Park is also an International Dark Sky Reserve.

Two landscapes, one address

Between the mountains and the scrubland

This is one of the most surprising charms of our location: in less than half an hour’s drive, the scenery changes completely.

Heading north towards Mont Lozère, as soon as you reach the village of Portes, chestnut trees and tall pines take over. Beneath your feet, schist and granite shape a landscape of ridges and deep valleys. The air changes, as does the light: we are in the Cévennes mountains.

Heading east, towards the lower Cèze valley and Mont Bouquet, a whole new world opens up before us. In barely fifteen minutes, we find ourselves amidst olive trees and holm oaks. We hear the cicadas, smell the savory and tread on sun-baked limestone. The bright, fragrant Mediterranean garrigue stretches out before us.

Two landscapes, two atmospheres, and the gîtes right in the middle.

There's plenty of life around here!

Biodiversity Micro-Adventure Kit

You don’t have to go far to discover the flora and fauna all around us! We invite you to set off on a family nature exploration right in and around the gîtes.

With the little ones, discover the rich biodiversity of the Cévennes National Park.

Butterflies, damselflies, grasshoppers, geckos and small wall lizards can be spotted in the garden. In the Auzonnet stream, crayfish, frogs and fish can be observed. As for birds, the list is long: egrets, herons, ducks, kingfishers, bats, starlings… If you’re lucky, you might spot Mr Beaver or our friends the otters, about two hours after dark.
