Hikes starting from the terraces and holiday cottages in the Cévennes

Hiking

Here, nature starts right on your doorstep!

Several trails start right from the gîtes. From a gentle stroll after a meal to a proper hike along the ridges, there’s something for every level.

A little further afield, there are waterfalls hidden in the undergrowth, breathtaking views, paths winding through the scrubland and even a secret spot to round off the day with a drink in hand, facing the Cévennes mountain range… We’ll tell you all about it below.

Leaving home

In our opinion (subjective ratings out of 3)

Whatever your fitness level, you can go for a walk starting from the gîtes.

From a gentle stroll along the banks of the Auzonnet, to a loop along the village’s nature trail, or a long hike up Mont Rouvergue, there’s something for everyone.

By following the nature trail, you’ll learn more about the history of our village, its mining past, and the flora and fauna that characterise our region. Did you know that the hill opposite the gîtes, which we encourage you to walk up, is actually a spoil heap – what people from Lorraine and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais call a ‘terril’?

Les petites aiguières

In our opinion (subjective ratings out of 3)

Please note: seasonal waterfalls!

The ‘Petites Aiguières’ emerge in the bed of the Séguissous, an intermittent stream. It is therefore between April and June, before the river dries up, that you should set out to explore these waterfalls.

The Séguissous winds its way through a limestone gorge, flowing from pool to pool and forming wonderful light-green natural pools. The stream meanders through the gorge, where numerous potholes provide ideal spots for swimming.

The walk isn’t long, but can be steep in places. Make sure you wear suitable footwear!
If the distance seems too long with young children, you could try the Grandes Aiguières instead.

Mount Bouquet

In our opinion (subjective ratings out of 3)

Less than 30 minutes from the house, set off to climb Mont Bouquet, a vast limestone plateau overlooking magnificent garrigue landscapes. From its summit, which rises to 631 metres, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Mont Aigoual and the blue Cévennes on one side, and the Rhône Valley with Mont Ventoux in the distance on the other. On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of the Mediterranean!

Once you’ve reached the summit, you’ll find a wide range of hikes of varying difficulty and elevation to choose from. If walking isn’t on the agenda, combine your climb with a visit to Lussan and Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie…

La route des cêtes vers l'Espinas
Stunning views of the Barre des Cévennes

L’Espinas

In our opinion (subjective ratings out of 3)

This hamlet, nestled in the middle of nowhere, isn’t just one of our top spots for a meal or a drink at the Relais de l’Espinas. Situated on the Route des Crêtes in Lozère, it’s also the perfect place to sit back, relax and admire the horizon, stretching from La Barre des Cévennes to Mont Bouquet. If the sky is clear enough, you’ll be able to see the Alps!

Once you’ve had your fill of the views, you can set off hiking in any direction. For example, head up above the hamlet, along the ridge, to the geological information board that explains the landscape, towards Mont Lozère and the Cévennes.
