Caves

Journey to the Centre of the Earth

If there were only one in the area! That would be too simple.
There’s the Chauvet 2 cave, an unmissable masterpiece of humanity and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but that’s not all. We’ve also chosen to tell you about La Cocalière, Trabuc, La Salamandre and the Aven d’Orgnac – less well-known but firmly etched in our memories since childhood.
Best visited in the off-season, when it’s raining, and in summer during heatwaves to enjoy the coolness underground!
Our favourite? How can we choose when they’re all so different yet complement each other so well!

Humanity’s first masterpiece

Chauvet 2 Cave

In our opinion (subjective ratings out of 3)

Step back in time, just 45 minutes from the holiday cottages!

You simply mustn’t miss this first masterpiece of humanity, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 36,000 years ago, artists created their masterpieces on the walls of a cave in the Ardèche! Let’s go back to the origins of art.

Wander in the footsteps of our ancestors, amidst an extraordinary bestiary featuring 14 species of dangerous animals: lions and cave bears, panthers, mammoths, woolly rhinoceroses… Painted in red ochre, engraved in flint, traced with a finger or charcoal, this masterpiece comes to life through the play of light and shadow.

The Aurignacian gallery completes the tour of the cave, and activities are offered during school holidays and at weekends from March to October. Educational tools, hands-on activities, immersion in a prehistoric setting, workshops to learn how to light a fire without a lighter or matches, to make tattoo designs or jewellery, drawing on the walls… as well as storytelling evenings or hologram projections… Young and old alike will all leave with stars in their eyes!

Open every day; opening hours vary depending on the season. Check the website for opening times.

Draperie Aven d'Orgnac
Between grandeur and intimacy

Aven d'Orgnac

In our opinion (subjective ratings out of 3)

7,000 m² of stalactites and stalagmites beneath ceilings over 30 metres high! The Aven d’Orgnac, a member of the Réseau des Grands Sites de France, is a magical place to admire countless stalactites and stalagmites, these natural sculptures born from the union of water and limestone. Shaped like ‘stacks of plates’, ‘giant palm trees’ or gigantic ‘drapery’, they reveal a palette of colours where the dominant white is sometimes edged with purple, ochre, yellow or brown.

The tour ends with a sound and light show in the magnificent Red Hall, the original gallery carved out by the underground river that flowed through it some 5 million years ago.

Grotte de la Salamandre
Incredible by nature

La Salamandre

In our opinion (subjective ratings out of 3)

Warning: extraordinary dimensions!

The enormous cavern before you is adorned with titanic stalagmites – the Crystal Giants – columns that in some cases collapsed millennia ago, drapery-like formations and delicate concretions reminiscent of ancient monsters.

A sumptuous ‘sound and light’ show transports us into a magical and grandiose spectacle.

Bonus: due to its enormous size, visitors with reduced mobility can access the viewing platform and watch the sound and light show from the top of the cavern.

La grotte de Trabuc
TRABUC OR THE SCIENTIFIC MYSTERY!

Grotte de Trabuc

In our opinion (subjective ratings out of 3)

The enigmatic ‘Hall of 100,000 Soldiers’ in the Trabuc Cave is famous worldwide because no one has ever understood how these miniature stalactites and stalagmites are formed. As well as the standard tour, which takes you down through the interactive trail, we also recommend reliving the excitement of the first explorers by descending by the light of a carbide lamp. Thrills (and a refreshing chill) guaranteed!

La cocalière
The Diamond Cave

La Cocalière

In our opinion (subjective ratings out of 3)

Recognised as one of the most beautiful caves in France, La Cocalière takes around an hour to explore and is suitable for all ages. We love it for the variety of its stalactites and stalagmites, which are reflected in the blue-tinged water of its natural pools. For its delicate limestone draperies, and for the beauty of the Diamond Dome, an extremely rare natural phenomenon.

A mark of quality: it was Pierre’s mum’s favourite cave!
